Issue

• As part of an ongoing Spares Redesign Programme a global Aeronautical OEM were looking to outsource the global storage and distribution of spares
• They had no defined ‘model’ against which to outsource, though they were seeking customer service improvements in addition to any cost savings that may accrue from rationalising the 19 current inventory holding locations

Solution

• Over a 13 week period a small team led the Invitation To Tender (ITT) process moving from 21 potential suppliers, to 10 tender recipients, to a selection of two suppliers for final negotiations (one an established industry player, the other a more ‘radical’ choice but potentially offering the best solution (in terms of both cost and service))
• Additionally, as a sense check for the various ITT bids received, a high level supply chain cost model was built and tested against 5 scenarios

Benefits

• Successful selection of two parties to enter the negotiation phase within a timescale that the client initially believed to be unachievable.
• The delivery of a supply chain cost model that enabled the selection to be based on objective cost and service data - both of the selected suppliers are offering improved customer service (in terms of lead time) and significantly reduced cost compared to the current in-house operations
