Issue

• An internal audit report had identified that Engineering Van held stocks (tools and equipment) were not visible at a corporate level, and thus were likely to be out of control
• It was estimated that this stock could be as high as £40m
• As the organisation was undertaking a wider stock reduction initiative this was felt to be unacceptable

• Structured interviews and facilitated workshops with internal audit, logistics management, field engineering management and field engineers to:

capture their requirements, issues and constraints around the current and any future processes

process and responsibility mapping

identification of any necessary systems requirements/changes to support the new processes

• Development and introduction of processes and procedures through which these stocks could become visible and thus be controlled
• Development of an algorithm through which the ‘ideal’ van stock could be determined for any particular field engineer
